During 1975–1990, the field coalesced around how teachers think and decide in practice, emphasizing think-aloud planning, lesson construction, and adaptive decisions shaped by experience. Induction and socialization of novice teachers gained prominence, highlighting mentoring, early support, access to information, and institutional structures that shape identity and instructional thinking during the transition into teaching. A parallel emphasis connected pedagogical content knowledge and beliefs to classroom practice, examining how beliefs about mathematics and science content influence instruction, with attention to novice–expert differences. Field-based teacher education and reflective practice were central, anchoring preparation in early field experiences, action research foundations, and critical approaches to developing reflective practitioners and improving preparation programs.
